The 10th year of the BET Awards had plenty of great moments, but some of those moments will be talked about for years to come. Those events are important to the history of the BET Awards as well as the artists’ careers. Which moments will go down in history?
The Comeback Kings
We can’t forget the big career-continuing returns, from Kanye West’s mountaintop performance of “Power” to T.I.’s energetic display of “Yeah Ya Know.”
Unlike Kanye and T.I., Chris Brown has performed consistently this past year; but his tribute to Michael Jackson has many agreeing that Chris is here to stay. My guess is that years from now we’ll look back at this performance as a major turning point in his career.
Another surprise comeback was El DeBarge. As one of my young friends said, “I don’t know who this guy is, but I know all his music.” I wouldn’t take that as an insult. I think that proves that good music is timeless.
Haiti Tribute
Kirk Franklin performed a moving tribute with “Are You Listening,” assisted by Fred Hammond, Marvin Sapp, Kim Burrell and Yolanda Adams. Although the news coverage has decreased, Haiti will be remembered.
The Achievers
What about Prince’s Lifetime Achievement Award? Patti LaBelle, Janelle Monae, Esperanza Spalding and Alicia Keys on top of a piano gave the Purple One his honors. Speaking of Alicia Keys, can you believe she’s been in the game for 10 years already? No doubt she had you singing along to her medley of #1 hits from the past decade.
The Non-Performances
It’s not just the performances getting the attention this year. Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim’s beef brings much attention to the former’s acceptance speech. Chris Brown’s acceptance speech has many hoping he’ll stay true to those words. Then, there’s Queen Latifah’s introduction of Diddy-Dirty Money, claiming that Diddy is “only seen in the company of fine women—just like me.” Was the Queen, who took on her past roles throughout the night to introduce performers, simply staying in character?
Another year, another night of history-making moments.
